Many, many years ago Aunt Mickey and I went shopping together, just the two of us. I had shopped often with my mother Mary, who was Aunt Mickey's sister, but I never went shopping with my Aunt before this "adventure" . My mother and I usually took the train to 14th Street but this day my Aunt and I took buses. Taking buses in New York is not a big deal if you know which ones to take. Well that day she was really not sure which buses would take us where we wanted to go. I remember getting on and off many buses that day and felt a mixture of fear, excitement, and confusion as we "toured" many unknown parts of New York. This adventure out with my aunt occurred years before the cell phone came into existence and I don't believe she called my mother on a pay phone so we could find our way back home. My main thought that day was this may be the last time I see my parents because I may never get back to Ridgewood. Well, eventually she found the right combination of buses to take and we got home safely. This week when I learned of her passing memories flooded into my mind from all the years I have known her. One of my fondest memories was of our "unplanned tour of many areas of NYC that day". I also remember she bought me a 78 record album, with songs from Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, in a small store off 14th Street. I don't think I particularly liked those singers but she picked out the album for me as a gift. You were a very special aunt and we will greatly miss you. May you rest in peace. Love, Joanne
